Rivet shape optimization using morphing techniques, modeFRONTIER and LS-DYNA in order to improve the riveting process

In the recent decades, CO2 emission reduction request has driven light vehicles development; more recently, the extremely competitive automotive market has forces the European car makers to develop premium class cars instead of low-cost vehicles.
The consequence of these reasons is that a modern car is actually a mix of conventional and non conventional materials; It means, from the join technology point of view, that traditional spot-weld joining is not applicable.
 This contribution refers to riveting joining simulation and represents the second phase of a co-design activity where, thanks to the rivet geometrical parameterization, the optimum rivet shape has been identified in order to guarantees the best structures strength and reliability.

The approach is unconventional because the rivet shape is not frozen at the beginning of the project but, exploring the performances of the feasible rivets, the best shape has been identified exploring a multi-objectives scenario.
